An unfortunate part of the fediverse is that it attracts people who were too obnoxious for even the more annoying parts of Reddit/Twitter/etc. I’ve made plenty of attempts to “get into” Mastodon and can confidently say that’s a miserable experience across the board if you aren’t willing to do the work to curate your feed. Even if you do get a feed that is free of bad actors, conversations rarely veer off-course from Linux, programming, computers, tech, etc., at which point that’s fine, I guess, but it’s hardly diverse. Also, for all the complaining about “techbros” ruining the fediverse, it sure is full of them.

I have more faith in Bluesky currently. If they’re able to achieve their own kind of federation then I’ll gladly jump ship since their userbase is a lot friendlier and more diverse that Mastodon IMO.

If you want to do a bit of engineering: CalDAV supports todo lists. I forget what server software I’ve got running, but I sync the list to my android phone via DAVx5 and tick off/add items via tasks. For other platforms you can just look for CalDAV-supported programs (most email apps.)

Do you need streaming?

Direct file playback via Kodi is better in every way IF all you need is local playback within your LAN and have devices that can run it. If you’ve got decent upload then it’ll work outside of it, too. Kodi also supports syncing between devices if you set up a MySQL database. Definitely not as simple as spinning up Plex/Emby/Jellyfin, though.

I know they removed it. The post was in reference to Lemmy’s development history, not the current source release.

Yup, it’s double entry.

I use Firefly for business and personal finance purposes. I do my books nightly via a script that imports line items from the sales platform I use. Firefly’s automation allows easy tag/category assignment based on any number of details (source/destination account, transaction description, etc.) A tag in my case is just “business name” (personal expenses have no tag), and categories are expense types. At the end of the tax period I can generate a report that I copy-paste into my tax software. So far all of my numbers have lined up perfectly across the board, but I also balance accounts by hand to make sure. Biggest problem is backing it all up and testing the backup. I backup the database nightly and test the latest backup every 2 weeks, at which point it goes to the cloud. I need to automate that.

The developer is also very active and there’s regular releases.

Friend of mine lives in bumfuck nowhere here in the US (like, no access to running water if it goes without raining for a few weeks - that kind of rural) and has gigabit up/down for $60 somehow. Meanwhile, there’s 2 or 3 ISPs in my area who will gladly take $60 for half that speed and dog shit upload. I pay for both a resi and biz line and the latter is the same speed for $15 more. Criminal.

Waiting for them to go live in my neck of the woods. Bookmarked!

Look into traefik. Once it’s set up I add a few labels to my compose files and traefik handles the rest.
