Banking tech is still run on FORTRAN and COBAL. It’s ancient and pretty much can’t be upgraded. Until there’s a major push for new technologies across all banking it’ll keep being this bad

The Linux series was one of the best, because it showed what would happen if someone who didn’t know what they were doing tried to move to Linux. Linux shills have been preaching “it’s the year of the Linux desktop” forever now, but since it’s so different from windows and macOS there’s a massive learning curve that only shows up once you’ve switched.
I would bet 8/10 people who have used windows/macOS for 30+ years would have many of the same problems as Linus did. I know I’ve made many of the same mistakes that were made by Linus/Luke in that series, including accidentally nuking my DE.
Linux sucks as a desktop if you aren’t already familiar with Linux from the terminal. There’s a few edge cases, but for the most part it’s not a good experience if you do anything more than web browsing.
I’m no Linus shill, though I do enjoy their content for the most part. He’s not a tech god like people make him out to be, he’s just a slightly above average tech nerd who’s a good presenter. And that’s the audience that the Linux shills are trying to push the OS onto.
Nope. I’ve fully accepted that in whatever extinction level event I’ll be gone in the first couple waves, and that’s how I want it.
I’ve got no skills to be able to survive on this planet alone. I’d just be prolonging my suffering, and I feel very little need to do that.
It’s mostly Linux and Politics, and most of my niche hobbies (and even most of the non-niche ones) are barely represented here, if at all.
It’s really disappointing. I have always been one to consume content, not create it, and it feels like if you’re not creating content there’s very little of interest. I want to like the app, but I find myself spending more time browsing Reddit in a web browser on my phone rather than using Lemmy.
Hello World is < 10 lines in Java. Just say you don’t know the language and go away.
Java runs the majority of corporate software out there, and it is very good at what it’s built for.
I’ll take Java over Python/Rust any day of the week
That’s why I like Java too. The fact that it’s so strict means I have to think about projects in a certain way and can’t just wing my way through it like Python.
Unfortunately that is the reality of American elections. First past the post means a 3rd party can effectively never win
Ignore all media, vote for whoever the democratic candidate is.
I realized that all the election media just makes me angry, and I already know who I’m NOT voting for, so there’s really only one choice anyways.
It’s almost like the whole thing is a politically motivated false impeachment to try to discredit Trump being impeached twice. They only want to impeach Biden because they can then point and say “Biden was impeached too, it means nothing”
I didn’t even realize I was in the android community tbh. Just scrolling local
I really should read more before replying 😂

It’s such a rare use case that there’s no point in installing something else for me
I think lots of people didn’t know what kind of game they were expecting. Some people bought the game because it was popular, rather than because they necessarily like the genre.
I’m not a DnD fan (tried playing a few times, just never clicked) and I find that the same things that I disliked about it are also the things I dislike about BG3.
That’s not to say it’s a bad game, and I’m enjoying it quite a bit, but there’s definitely elements of DnD that I feel are very limiting to the enjoyment of playing.
Playing BG3 has definitely made me curious about their other games and I’ll have to give them a shot
It gets close, but it’s more about the competition. I’m not a real race car driver, nor will I be in the future, so I’m not chasing 100% realism.
You lose the seat of the pants feel, but there’s been a good amount of improvements to hardware over the last few years that have really increased the fidelity of it.
Lots of instances are temporarily halting image uploads due to csam attacks against Lemmy. I’m not sure if this is what’s happening in your case, but it may be something to check on
True, but they started inexpensive. Most everything can be done with a few hundred bucks of hardware in both fields. It’s only when you want to get into the really high end stuff that it gets expensive. My $300 used Nikon D3500 works phenomenally for almost everything, and that’s true for most entry level gear.
Sim racing and Photography
Started with a $200 wheel and pedals setup, now my rig is worth we’ll over $2.5k and is basically top of the line. Upgraded parts one at a time over the last few years and it’s now as good as it gets.
Photography has me slowly upgrading lenses and eventually a new camera body. Just upgraded to a 200-500 F5.6 lens the other week for when I’m going to shoot the Daytona 24 this coming January.
Depends on a given week. Some weeks it’s 8 hour days morning to evening and some weeks it’s finish all my work for the week on Wednesday before noon.
Main desktop has
2 2TB NVME SSD’s
2 1TB SATA SSD’s
1 8TB SATA HDD
Sim Racing Rig has
Nas/Server PC has
4 4TB HDDs
2 16TB HDDs
1 2TB SSD
It’s a major inconvenience and I’ll stick to one. If it can’t be accessed from Lemmy.world it’s not really my problem tbh and I’ll just act like it doesn’t exist.
