XMPP would be the best choice at this point in time, as it doesn’t suffer the downfalls of Matrix (though even Matrix would be better than Discord).

You will need to create a new account, but it is possible to export all of your subscriptions to a new account. There should be a thing you can click for that in your settings menu to download the export file, which you would then import into your new account.
Your old comments will not transfer, however.
Apparently a few coop banks somewhere are adopting/have adopted taler, so hopefully it takes off.
Sublinks and piefed don’t compete with lemmy, or at least, they don’t weaken the ecosystem since they are all inter compatible.
They switched it for me, and can confirm, absolutely hate it.
The Photon UI for lemmy can play embedded videos.
Seconding Unciv, one of the best mobile games around.
If you want to create a self-hosted chat community, XMPP would probably be the best bet, as it supports solid encryption. My instance owner has one set up for the community, and it’s worked pretty great to coordinate with other mods.
Grist Magazine is pretty good, mostly focuses on environmental news
I feel like the local community aspect of small and medium sized instances is a pretty big plus of lemmy. I can click ‘local’ and get a nice view of what my particular community is doing at the moment, which happens to be things I’m interested in.
Is it truly that off-putting to new users to pick a single category that interests them, then their language, then just pick one of the suggested instances at random? There’s even a ‘general’ category they can pick if they simply cannot decide on any other interest.
Every other social media site I’ve signed up to, including reddit, has made me select from a list of interests before letting me use the site so they can populate my feed with related things, presumably to enhance engagement and stop me from growing disinterested too quickly.
If everyone dogpiles into a single generic instance, it could push that instance into unsustainable territory financially (especially with a mass exodus), unless the user base is willing to donate to support the instance. Spreading the load out over many instances would ease the load on any one server admin.
I would probably use gals in your specific example, but personally, I would use guys if addressing a group of girl friends, but that’s just how I perceive the word. I guess once you add ‘the’ or ‘some’ behind guys, I perceive it as masculine, but it feels totally neutral to me in other contexts, such as “C’mon guys, let’s go X!” or “Guys, check this out.”
Encouraging everyone onto a single instance kinda defeats the purpose, and I feel it’s not as much of an issue with the new join-lemmy.com redesign, which recommends an instance based on your interests.
I wrote up this post for anyone to reference to help onboard people to lemmy.
Up/downvotes now count as well, AFAIK.
I’ve seen you all around lemmy, and always enjoyed your takes on things. It’s crazy to learn that you’ve been going through all that all the while. I hope things get better for you, man!
You might be able to replace the Gatorade with Morton’s lite salt added to your flavored drink mix of choice (I personally buy True Citrus drink mix powder in bulk 500 pack boxes, since it’s cheap, has no bad ingredients, and has no added sugar, so you can sweeten it yourself).
There are guides online that describe how much Morton’s lite salt to use to equal Gatorade.
Bear in mind lemmy.world is still on lemmy version 18.5, which is lacking some nice new features.
One of the features in 19.x is an option called ‘scaled’ view, which gives more weight to content from smaller communities and instances, which lets you see a much broader variety of content.
(I just realized you meant aggregating as in multiple communities under one mega communitie, I assume. Personally I see the lack of that as a feature, not a bug).
If you’re talking about the two that I think you are, I agree. I suspect my pleasant experience is due to my instance defederating completely with those, which is pretty swank.
At least in the communities I’m subscribed to and interact with, I’ve still seen it mostly be positive interactions.
Florisboard has decent swipe typing from what I remember, and should be available in F-droid.
EDIT: after checking, I see Floris has not been updated in two years on f-droid. :(
