Just a heads up, you can also freeze fresh spinach in the freezer for smoothies! It keeps pretty well because it freezes into individual “chips” that don’t stick together unless it thaws. It’s excellent if you’d usually be throwing away spinach that was going to go bad. I recommend buying and freezing a large portion immediately in a freezer bag, just so it doesn’t get mushy in your fridge.

If you carve out a tunnel into the floor and have the entrance down a foot or two, the wind can’t blow directly in, and the cold air will sink to fill the tunnel/entrance with your sleeping platform being quite warm.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a video game that you just don't get the hype about?
16·2 months agoGTA. Games 3 and 4 were good, 5 was kinda fun, but I’m not really at all excited for the same formula over and over again. Even battlefield feels a bit samey. Only indie games are really taking risks these days. And some of them are fantastic.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•has anyone had a gamer partner or been that gamer partner? what helped the relationship despite being a gamer?
2·3 months agoGaming is a hobby, but just that. A hobby. We like to do other stuff like camping, skiing, hiking, etc.
It may be good to have an open discussion with your gf about doing other things, or a couple’s counselor. The latter might be easier if you are unsure about how to really talk about it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the most blatantly stupid thing you've witnessed someone do?
121·3 months agoSomeone hopped a nearly 6 foot tall by 4 feet deep construction barrier blocking both ends of an out of service escalator, with multiple pallets or replacement escalator stairs stacked all around it. (The elevator was in service right by the escalator)
Anyways, they predictably fell through the massive hole in the escalator and cut their shins to ribbons on the exposed stairs. They then got to the bottom of the train station platform and were bitching about their legs. Eventually, they hailed a police officer just to bitch and whine further about their gouged shins. The officer had the grace to just listen to the guy and not call him a dumb motherfucker for hopping the multiple tall plastic barriers and signs. I was just shaking my head in amazement until my train came.
They’re lucky that they didn’t fall the 30-45 feet down to the train platform by hopping the construction barrier either.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Most technologies continue to improve with innovation, like WiFi. What is a technology that was nearly perfect upon conception?
8·3 months agoWow, things really haven’t changed all that much, haha. Pretty sure you can get essentially that exact same design at outdoor stores.

Technology@beehaw.org•Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish?
41·3 months agoFinding things is such a pain in the ass nowadays. You get a problem with something, say you need a spare part. None of the stores have it. It is on Amazon…but it won’t be here for a solid two weeks. It’s infuriating.
Something that should take less than an hour to fix is now a multi week wait, because of stupid online retailers. And it will be something super common, like a tool to tighten up loose spokes on a bike wheel.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some uBlock Origin filters you're using to make the internet nicer to use?
2·4 months agoAnyone know if there’s a ublock filter for popups? Firefox mobile is getting swarmed by site popups and it drives me insane.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Men can take their shirts off for hot days and exercise. Why can't women do the same in 2025?
2·4 months agoSome people get turned on seeing topless men but it’s not a sex crime for men to be shirtless in public.
This is the thing that really bothered me. It’s so one-sided. Perhaps people won’t be comfortable doing it, for various reasons, but the legal limitation is what actually irritates me. One silver lining is that a lot of places are starting to allow it, even if culturally, it hasn’t picked up yet.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Did anyone else not even know who Charlie Kirk was!?
7·4 months agoI knew him after he dressed up in kink gear a decade ago to “own the libs”(?) on some college campus, and his second in command got catastrophically drunk, passed out, and shit her pants like a horse at a college party that same year. I assumed they never recovered from the double bout of extraordinary cringe, but apparently they did?
Apparently I’ve been living under a rock, or the guy was deep underground.
At one point, I got into indigenous history. Super interesting stuff, but I had to laugh when I read that they landed in a “new” area. They colonized the shit out of it and the poor mini-humans living there, and had a caste system that was apparently pretty brutal (no social mobility, low caste men were used as human sacrifices). Land was distributed for everyone, and nobody “owned” the land, but when a chief died, everyone got their lands redistributed by the new chief and his cabinet, despite it being “everyone’s land”.
Eventually the people had a massive war and collected all the power into one region, euro-style.
Then, Europeans came and colonized the shit out of them, such is the circle of life. Elsewhere in our region, a separate indigenous group practiced slavery, and would enslave people from raids far and wide too. Until they too were dommed by Europeans.
Anyways, this appears to be a serious chink in humanity’s armor, and it allows us to do some terrible things to each other (See Russia’s invasion and systematic slaughter of civilians in Bucha). It appears to be a crime of indifference and opportunity. We’ve apparently been taking each other’s shit since people apparently had shit to take. :/

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you think of imitation and lab-grown meats?
2·4 months agoI’d be fine with lab grown meat, I’d actually prefer it, for health and safety reasons. Real meat is dirty.
I’d say it’s decent, but the story and damage mechanics are a little worse than 1. I think some patches and a “hk mode” for magic/healing/damage would be nice.

2·5 months agoUnderwater welding, too. The compensation is insanely high because it is unbelievably dangerous, especially with large pressure differences (eg, working on undersea sewer outflows that can suck you in while welding them shut.)
Here’s an interesting video on Delta P, and why it’s so dangerous.

Rise of Nations: Gold Edition (2003).
The controls are ancient, but the gameplay and music still holds up.
