  • Sounds like avocado toast-ian blame-shifting to me. Just like the rest of these pieces, they ignore the obvious, horrible conditions of life, and choose to tut-tut at the abused for ‘improperly’ using their free time.

just like the avocado toast shit, the translation of these pieces is broadly:

Look away, reader, from the terrible low wages, high cost of living, and soul-crushing work hours japanese people are forced to endure. Focus your attention on these 19% of young people, who don’t know any better, who you are better than. Laugh at these losers who admit that one time they almost couldn’t cover their expenses!!

    Let’s look at the article.

Interestingly enough, while these results indicate that the popularity of in-game transactions may be increasing, the average amount of money spent on them is actually decreasing.

Hmm, could it be the actual problem is the immense increases to CoL young (and all) people have been under? I wonder why the article doesn’t even bring it up? So curious 🤔

Oh well. So like, how much money are we talking about on gacha? How much are these 19% of young folks spending? Must be a ton eh?

Article doesn’t say, but we do get these numbers

In 2024, young people spent an average of around 5,138 yen ($35.85 USD) on microtransactions per month while this year’s survey results state that the average amount of money spent on microtransactions is 4,247 yen ($29.63 USD) per month.

So it’s not a lot, not really. I say again, this article is slop created to take your eyes away from the real problems of the world and victim blame the ones suffering under them.

I hate Nintendo exclusives because i hate Nintendos hardware. I do love their software, so i emulate it.

I get why they need exclusives, if they want to keep making consoles instead of turning into SEGA they need to give peeps a reason to buy their console, which since the wii (?) has had a deliberate focus on less powerful hardware. If they didn’t have those N exclusives those games would look better on their competitor’s systems.

Like i said, i love their games, can’t stress that enough. I hate, hate, HATE their hardware tho. I’ve refused to buy Nintendo stuff since i felt burned by n64s crap analog sticks (i hold a mean grudge haha) and the only way Nintendo would get my hard fought-stretched-to-hell $ is if they sold pc copies of their games.

I wish they’d consider doing that (after a few years of exclusivity even, i’m a patientgamer) but i don’t think they ever will :(

  • It was made around the pinnacle of sprite graphics (the ps1 came out soon after, ushering us into the 3d era). Sprite graphics age better than 1st Gen 3D fo sho, the music makes the most of the hardware (tho its chip tunes) but its the art direction that puts it over the top and into greatness. I am am old man lol, i played it when it came out, aaand i replay it every few years or so, take my opinion for what it’s worth. Caveats aside i think if you like a good story you’ll like chrono trigger

  • counterpoint: it’s the far more prevalent mentality of “blaming foolish consumers” that ruins it for the rest of us.

Expecting consumers to ever do differently at scale is a dead-end fantasy we all need to stop having.

Only market regulation stops manipulative market practices.

Doing anything less then “advocating for laws to stop this shit” izza giant waste of brain cells, yet i see threads of people making that useless case every time something like this happens.

Change will not come from consumers voting with their wallets, FULL STOP

If someone readin thinking it will, NEVER think this again.

Hey! I see you, looking for an example of consumer action making a difference: Go find me 100 more. You’ll need about 100 to start make up for alla times deregulation have hurt and currently hurting consumers now.

Hear me: anyone advocating for consumer action or blaming consumers is doing them companies dry-fucking us a huge favor. These bad actors can and will continue as long as it is legal to do so.
