I loved my S10. It was the best vehicle I ever had.

I bought it in 2005 for $3,000 with 42k miles on it because the previous owner’s dad was a drunk and kept rubbing the side of it pulling in and out of the driveway. I didn’t care that the paint looked bad, and I drove that truck for 11 years. I sopd it when the engine gave up the ghost, but kinda wished I’d just paid for the repair instead of buying the Colorado, which I was never really pleased with.

I’ve loved the NV200 though. I teach scuba as a side gig and it makes a great dive gear hauler.

Correct. I meant the Colorado, which they took off the market for the 2013 and 2014 models to redesign as a larger truck. Ford did the same thing.

That was a particularly dumb error on my part, BTW. I owned a 2001 S10 and 2012 Colorado. Now I own a 2020 NV200.

In 2012 the federal fuel economy standards were changed to no longer consider the classification of vehicle, but just its footprint. So suddenly a Corolla had less-strict fuel economy requirements than a small truck.

So the Ranger, Dakota, S-10, etc were all discontinued, and manufacturers learned that the easiest way to meet fuel economy standards was to make the vehicles bigger every time the requirements increase.

It’s also why around 2022, every small cargo van (NV200, Transit Express, ProMaster City) stopped being produced. It’s also why the Maverick has the “standard” model as the hybrid while the one you can actually find at the dealers is the “upgrade” traditional engine.

Yeah. This is something I’ve been trying to explain for a while. Between the Steam Deck and the declining overall market share of PCs, there’s a huge jump in Linux as far as percentage of users goes, but it isn’t actually making significant waves in general usage. Regular users are sticking with Windows and Mac, but now there’s 1 Windows or Mac laptop in a household shared by everyone now versus multiple laptops and a desktop a few hardware cycles back.

My favorite example is the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act, which requires manufacturers to honor warranty on products that you or a third party have worked on in the past unless the manufacturer can prove that the specific malfunction for which you’re seeking warranty service was caused by the previous repair or modification.

Those “warranty void if removed” stickers are illegal.

It also prohibits manufacturers refusing to repair a product due to unrelated damage.

The people who are sharing photos from their phone on social media are running them through filters anyway. All the “smart” shit in the photos are essentially just built-in Instagram filters. And for that you can just download one of 3 million camera apps.

I don’t need fancy processing on my photos as longs as it lets me capture some kind of raw format. For photos that I actually care about the quality, a raw is better anyway.

Most people won’t give 2 shits or even be aware of the change.

Back in the good-ish days of reddit, they had ads that I actually appreciated. They were clearly labeled as ads and had a different color, were at the top of the feed only, so once you scrolled past the first one you were done, and we’re essentially just sticky promoted posts, so they had comment sections.

You could find honest reviews of the products in the ads. Shills we’re identified and down voted into oblivion, so the real shit tended to land on top. It encouraged advertisers who actually had quality products on offer and who understood their audience. They were the only online ads that ever led directly to me buying a product.

Android has a feature you can turn on that adds “lockdown mode” as an option if you hold the power button, which requires a password. I just tried taking a screenshot, but I don’t think I can while in the power menu.

Yeah. They published the minimum specs to get the OS to run at all with zero consideration for running actual software.

The thing with Vista was it was it was th3 first really major rebuild of Windows in a long time. Going to 98, ME, XP, etc you had increased minimum specs, but things like drivers and shit generally worked fine, so as long as you had the necessary RAM and processor to run the OS, you could just install the new version and shit would probably work.

So when Vista came along, the manufacturers selling existing models just shipped with the new OS expecting everything to work without testing.

Windows Vista launch was a fucking mess. My office bought a laptop for a coworker in early 2007 that shipped with Vista but didn’t have Vista-compatible drivers for the on-board audio. They had to buy an external USB sound card.

I think the difference here is that Twitter has basically installed a “child porn” button. If their reaction had been to pull the product and install effective safeguards, it wouldn’t be as bad. It’s a serious fuckup, but people screw up every day.

Instead, they’ve made it so you can pay them to have access to the child porn generator.

The Zune software could be run on XP. Running that in a VM on a more modern system shouldn’t bee too difficult.
