  • Tech is hard, leaders aren’t always technical. AI is great at bullshitting, and it’s swooned many CEOs into thinking it will 10x (make them 10x more efficient than they previously were) existing employees / replace the need for programmers. Lots of leaders just look to what other leaders at companies are doing - some see what elon does at twitter as proof that downsizing drastically won’t kill your company.

Programming is like editing a book with many chapters. New developers need time to learn the story line of the book before they can begin editing anything. If the book has been around and edited continuously for over a decade, it’s going to take some time for those developers to understand the book well enough to start making meaningful contributions. Lots of these tech companies have multiple books each with many chapters, and one thing leadership either doesn’t realize or doesn’t seem to factor into the equation is that maintaining these books and all their story arcs and character development gets harder and harder over time. Truly in the tech industry, it’s more expensive to train a new hire than it is to promote an existing hire.

But again, leaders are listening to folks like elon musk…

  • When something comes up in my feed and I have comments to add, I add them. I didn’t seek this community out, nor am I badmouthing them. Devs gotta get paid, and if they want to add ads, so be it - users may not like it but the devs are free to do so.

though, if ads are desired, maybe don’t just allow self-serve ads without any kind of review. or programmatic ads, or image ads, well, i mean, this is what we open ourselves up to when we include ads, right?

  • Just going to argue on behalf of the other users who know apparently way more than you and I do about this stuff:

WhY nOt juSt UsE thE FBi daTaBaSe of CSam?!

    (because one doesn’t exist)

(because if one existed it would either be hosting CSAM itself or showing just the hashes of files - hashes which won’t match if even one bit is changed due to transmission data loss / corruption, automated resizing from image hosting sites, etc)

(because this shit is hard to detect)

Some sites have tried automated detection of CSAM images. Youtube, in an effort to try to protect children, continues to falsely flag 30 year old women as children.

OP, I’m not saying you should give up, and maybe what you’re working on could be the beginning of something that truly helps in the field of CSAM detection. I’ve got only one question for you (which hopefully won’t be discouraging to you or others): what’s your false-positive (or false-negative) detection rate? Or, maybe a question you may not want to answer: how are you training this?

  • Yes, sure but… let’s take a look at CEO pay. Are your CEOs paid 100x more than the highest paid (underling) employee at that company? If not, that’s not the american way! Your businesses are still in business likely because CEOs there consider workers to be a valuable asset. In america, CEOs consider themselves to be the most valuable asset. We would need to decrease their pay to something more reasonable like 10x the highest paid (underling) employee at the company. Until then, we’re all easily replacable.

Severence is nice but in most cases you have to sign an NDA saying that you won’t discuss your severence or your time at the company, and that you won’t paint them in a bad light.
