  • I get where you’re coming from, but given the cost of equipment these days, it’s important to consider whether or not the zero-config big box brand stuff will be around long enough to be worth the cost. While it’s a PITA to spend your efforts setting this all up, doing it yourself using open protocols can be worth it in the long run. And 9 out of 10 times, when you do it yourself, you can just leave it alone and forget about it.

Edit: there is a good write-up between zigbee and matter, and for ease of use it looks like matter would be better for your use cases.

  • Whenever you’re out and about with your dad, and you see attractive women, point them out and make “innocent” comments about how attractive she is, and ask your dad’s opinion on them. Maybe drop a “MILF” (without saying “MILF”) in the conversation once in a while.

[you noticing a mom with her kid(s)]

You: Hey dad, she’s pretty hot, no?

Dad: [grumbles] yeah sure. I guess.

You: Not hard to believe she’s a mom.

[blank stare him for a few seconds before quickly changing the subject]

You could also sneeze once in a while, asking him if he has any tissues you could use. If he says no, you could respond, “surely you have tissues somewhere, no?” Blank stare him for a few seconds before changing the subject. Same thing with asking for any hand moisturizer.

But don’t come right out and say anything to him about it. You want him to sit uncomfortably with this nagging doubt that maybe you know, but maybe you don’t.

Edit: damn. Y’all ain’t got no sense of humor over here @lemm.ee. I’m a dad, and if my kid did this to me, I’d find it hilarious. Lighten up a little. Life is too short, and there are very few things to laugh about. This should not be one of them.

  • You should listen to your medical professional

Yes, and absolutely, No! If you’ve built a rapport with somebody, and you trust them, then yes listen to them. If you feel uncomfortable with them, then get a second (or third) opinion. If you’re ever unsure about why your doctor suggested something, ask them questions. If they wave you off or get offended, then maybe they don’t have your best interest at heart, and are more concerned for their pride.

The point is, you are your only advocate*. If you do not stand up for yourself, no one else will. It’s also important to note that your mind is yours alone. Only you know how you feel, what you think, and can make decisions based on your thoughts. Do your best to convey them to others as you can, but give yourself grace in that you can’t always make people understand you.

    * There are always exceptions, and some people cannot advocate for themselves. In my non-medical opinion, OP doesn’t sound like someone who cannot advocate for themselves.

  • Hmm. Not once have I had to take an exam. I did a lot of projects; both group and individual. My last project was to read a research paper, and do a 25 minute presentation on what the paper was about. That kind of stuff.

I plan on spending time with my kids, working on my house, and enjoying not being in school for a while.

I’ve been in IT in various capacities for over 20 years now. I’ve been a web developer for the past 17 years. I actually work at the university, so I got to take the courses at no charge. So if you’re interested in getting one yourself, you should look into working for a university. It’s a seriously good gig.

Realistically, if I had to choose a different career path in IT, I’d choose mobile development. I’ve been doing the web for so long, I think I’ve finally run out of passion for it. That’s part of the reason for the degree; gives me a chance for upward mobility.

Triceratops. Those guys were badass with their horns.

So what is it you do in IT?
