  • With a quick search on Zillow for Lincoln, Nebraska (~300k pop college town), cheapest I can find is $90k for a 1 bed/1 bath 500 sqft condo. $100k for a 1 bed/1 bath 500 sqft house, though technically that’s a foreclosure so you might not consider that to count. The cheapest normal house for sale that I can find is $110k for a 2 bed, 1 bath 1500 sqft house. It’s an older home, but actually a pretty decent location (close-ish to downtown).

I try to make it pretty balanced. Dnd isn’t really balanced around constantly long resting, and I think resource management is part of the fun. Low level spells are pretty meaningless if you always have high level spells slots to blast through and such.

    So my approach is this:

    1. Only long rest after my 2 short rests
    2. Short rest when reasonable, such as when the party has a good chunk of HP missing.
    3. Generally aim for 3-4 encounters per long rest (encounters don’t have be combat, can be anything you expend resources on, such as healing or charming an NPC)

So far it’s worked out pretty nicely. It makes the game more challenging and rewarding, imo.

  • You can upcast it for more damage. It gets 1d8 every 2 levels of upcast. But there are much better uses of your higher spellslots, like Spirit Guardians. As for missing, the attack roll is based on your spellcasting modifier. At level 10, you should have 20 points in Wisdom, which would give a +5 bonus to its attack rolls.

With some exceptions, the only things in dnd (5e) that typically scale with character level are cantrips, class features, and anything that uses your attribute modifers. For spells, you generally either upcast for some improvement, or (more often) use more powerful, higher level spells. But lower level spells can still be useful in their own right, especially if you play the game as intended and don’t long rest excessively, since then you need to manage your resources carefully and higher level spells slots are in shorter supply than lower level ones.
