The icon thing can be worked around with something like heimdall. I host my own docker container of it and just set that as my startup page in my browser. Looks much nicer than a blank page and everything happens in my own network.

Ubuntu will ask you if usage data can be collected and sent to canonical when you first log in after installation. You get to look at the exact data that would be sent before making a decision and if you say no, then they’ll comply with that and never ask you again.
I just have them check for my wifi. If that’s what they’re connected to, then the nas is available. If not, then there’s no point trying to mount it. However, one day every month my nas pulls updates and shuts down afterwards, so that I need to boot it again when I get home from work. But my laptop boots just as fast as it normally does, even though it fails to connect to the nas.
Write a systemd service, that’s how my computers mount my nas. you just need to have it run under your user instead of root or point it towards the right keys manually.
Graphene would allow them to create a non-owner profile with no APP store. That way, their kids wouldn’t be able to install anything and the parent could install apps in the owner profile and then permit the kid to use it.
Screen time and such would not be configurable though I think.
Sponsor block, because sponsor segments are ads and darkreader because dark mode is just better
Get a pixel and install GrapheneOS (they make it super easy with their web-based installer). You can even reinstall google play services and then harshly restrict their system access, massively boosting your privacy without sacrificing usability. It also has a very little footprint and you can use aurora store to get google play store apps or fdroid for even better privacy.
You’re right!
Does paying for it also remove the trackers, or just the ads?
idk if the other commenter experienced the same bug as I did, but for me, deleting characters in the comment text box would also delete the last space. So, for example, if I typed “idk if the other commenzr”, and I started deleting the ‘r’ and then ‘z’, the text would turn into "“idk if the othercommen”. It would just keep going like that. Otherwise Jerboa is fantastic though, but it get’s annoying fast.
Privacy. Sync includes Google trackers, whereas other apps for lemmy do not. I get it though, gotta make money somehow. Still, I’d rather use something else and donate to the dev on occasion.
Sync seems great, but it has three Google trackers included, so I’m not using it. Jerboa, Connect and Voyager are great, but they all have some downsides. My keyboard is weird in Jerboa, Connect does not allow me to sort by subscribed and Voyager’s comment-upvote system is a bit clunky, being hidding behind another tap. Also, Voyager’s UI generally looks like it’s made for iPhone, which is not what I’m looking for. But for the moment I’ll stick with it.
Ignore them, as long as your firewall is set up properly.
the site loads way faster for me than reddit ever did, to the point that I’m actually stoked about it
I’m using jerboa right now. Got it from fdroid and it works really well!
I use GrapheneOS without Google play services. All apps I use are either from fdroid or the aurora store. You could also install lineageOS or eOS, Graphene only runs on Pixels.
I use Organic Maps on my degoogled pixel. Does not have quite as much data as google maps, but works really well for navigation and uses openstreetmaps’ data.
good point about scams. I’ve been using keepassxc with the browser extension and it works really, really well too.
It should have legal consequences for the worlds most valuable corporation to just kill that many jobs
