I think there’s something with age and lead poisoning that makes people short sighted, easily manipulated with emotional appeals, and short tempered.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•New York lawmakers endorse Governor's plan to reduce car insurance premiums by making it harder for crash victims to seek compensationEnglish
19·5 days agowhy don’t they look into ways that cars might cause fewer injuries instead of abandoning the injured?
I’m pissed they’re repaving the streets near me but they’re not taking the time to make them any safer. No curb extensions or daylighting. Certainly nothing so extreme as a separate bike lane.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Boy I was wrong about the FediverseEnglish
2·6 days agoWell, yes, “why don’t you care about things?” is a timeless problem. People don’t like to see beyond the immediate. Probably because in pre-history, the creatures that focused on right now did better than the ones who went “but if we keep cutting down the trees, eventually it’s going to cause problems.”
Well, now we have many problems, and our brains have not advanced.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Boy I was wrong about the FediverseEnglish
201·7 days agoIt’s one of those self fueling problems. Businesses post on Instagram because people go there, and people go there in part because that’s where they found out about businesses doing stuff.
Better options are possible, but the big money is backing this hell. Less money to be made from RSS feeds , web rings, and email newsletters.
I don’t use any social media other than this. I find out about bands I like playing from their email lists or bandsintown. I’m on a couple “things happening in the city” email newsletters. It doesn’t demand my attention.

87·7 days agoI really would like to somehow convince more people to adopt the idea that, like, Facebook and friends are run by bad people and you can choose not to use their products. Just stop. Find another way. Be uncomfortable for a little while.
But people aren’t up to the challenge.

Technology@beehaw.org•AI layoffs backfire as cutting staff doesn't cut it, firms warned
8·8 days agoYep. Place I’m at is in some sort of “hiring freeze”. They’re not replacing people who left. They also told the many (probably not strictly legal) contractors that they won’t be renewing them. It’s absurd.

Baldur's Gate 3@lemmy.world•In the 33 months since Baldur's Gate 3 launched, it's hardly ever fallen out of the top 5 most-played games on Steam DeckEnglish
2·10 days agoI didn’t fuss with the camera much. The biggest mod I got was “Feat every level”, because normal D&D leveling is so boring and choiceless. Then I got some mods to add more feats, and add more fights. But what I really want is a like total conversion to some other system. Something with dice pool and a better armor system.
A quick search found https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/945 , which i can’t vouch for but might be for you.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the most toxic mentality that people have nowadays?
4·11 days agoI think a lot about how “good” and “fun” are two different things.
You can have a game that’s a fascinating exploration of a theme that really unifies mechanics and story, but is an absolute downer of misery to play.
You can also have a game that’s a glorified slot machine with bugs, no real player input, and abusive monetization, but people’s brains light up playing it.
There’s some subjectivity of course, but sometimes I see games that are good at what they’re trying to be, but I don’t have any fun with them. Some people seem to demand those overlap all the time.

12·12 days agoMaybe shame and embarrassment would work, but the kind of people who drive this kind of car are probably anti-social assholes who don’t care about other people very much.
But these people get off on being jerks. There’s something wrong with their brain so empathy doesn’t work right.

I vote in every election. New York has ranked choice for some things now, which is nice. The way judges are picked is pretty bad, though.
